Why your Local Services Ads are showing but not getting leads

People are seeing you and choosing someone else, or they are reaching out and nobody is catching it. The second is more common than owners think and cheaper to fix. Here is how to tell which one you have, and what Google actually ranks on.

If your Local Services Ads are showing but the phone is not ringing, one of two things is true. People are seeing you and choosing someone else, or they are reaching out and nobody is catching it. The second is more common than owners expect, and it is the cheaper one to fix, so start there.

Read the account first

Three numbers tell you which problem you have. If impressions are near zero, this is the wrong page: read why your ads are not showing. If impressions are healthy and leads are not, look at your responsiveness and your lead list. Missed calls, unread messages and unopened booking requests are leads you paid for and lost, and they also lower your ranking. Then compare your rating, review count and photos with the businesses above you in the carousel.

Leads you are not catching

  1. Missed calls. Google says missed calls can lower your responsiveness, which is part of how it decides how likely your ad is to produce a lead. Since 1 October 2026 a missed call during business hours can also be charged as a lead once the caller has waited 20 seconds. How that rule works.
  2. The wrong phone number. Call the number on your ad. We have found accounts where it did not match the Business Profile, and accounts where it rang a desk nobody sat at.
  3. Leads landing where nobody looks. A painting contractor came to us after another agency had set leads to arrive as booking requests through the Business Profile instead of calls to the office. The ads ran, the money was spent, and the leads sat unopened. Decide how each lead type reaches you and turn on notifications for all of them.
  4. Message and booking leads with nobody on them. Google says giving customers more ways to reach you makes a lead more likely, especially at night and on weekends. But an unanswered message hurts your responsiveness, and a booking request nobody opens is a lead you paid for and lost. Turn them on only if someone checks them every day.

A note on message leads. We have seen a rising number of message leads that look like attempts to make advertisers burn budget rather than real enquiries. Some of our clients have turned messages off for their most expensive job types and kept calls as the way in. Rate every suspicious one so Google's automated review learns.

Leads you are losing to the business above you

Google ranks Local Services Ads on your bid and on how likely your ad is to produce a lead. The second part covers how quickly you answer calls and messages, how relevant your services and bio are to the search, your rating, how many reviews you have, your response time, your photos and the verification checks you have completed. Distance is not on the list.

Reviews do the heaviest lifting. Google's own ad rankings page lists rating and number of reviews first under profile quality, ahead of response time and photos. A roofer we audited recently had 45 reviews. The businesses above it had between 107 and 679. No setting change closes that gap. The system is heavily weighted toward review count and how steadily new ones arrive, and the only answer is to ask every customer, every time, with a link that takes them straight to the review form.

Photos and the bio are not decoration. Google lists high-quality images as part of profile quality and says higher-quality profiles may rank higher and pay less per lead. Use real photos of your work, not stock, and write a bio that says what you do and where in the first line.

Position matters more on a phone. A Google Local Services Ads specialist told us by phone in October 2026 that eligible businesses can appear across up to 20 slots. Most searches that produce a call happen on a phone, where the carousel shows two or three businesses before anyone scrolls. Being eligible and ranked sixth is close to not showing at all.

When leads suddenly drop

Look for what changed. Missed calls dragging down responsiveness. A lapsed document. A budget that now runs out early in the week, or a daily budget that changed when the account moved into Google Ads. Job types switched off. A new competitor with more reviews. If nothing changed, check the season. A roofer will not get June volume in October, unless it is hail season in Denver. But seasonality rarely takes leads to zero, so if it has, something else is wrong.

Budget and bidding

Raise the budget only if you are spending all of it every period and the leads are good. If you are underspending, more money buys nothing, because the problem is ranking. On bidding, Google recommends Maximize Leads and says businesses using it typically get more leads than similar businesses that do not. If your account has moved into Google Ads, manual bidding has been removed anyway, so the question answers itself.

Common questions about Local Services Ads not getting leads

Why am I getting impressions but no leads on Local Services Ads?

People are seeing you and choosing someone else, or they are reaching out and nobody is catching it. Check for missed calls, unread messages or booking requests, a wrong phone number, and how your reviews and photos compare with the businesses above you.

Why did my Local Services Ads leads suddenly drop?

Look for what changed: missed calls lowering your responsiveness, a lapsed document, a budget that runs out early, job types switched off, or a new competitor with more reviews. If nothing changed, check whether it is your slow season.

How do I rank higher on Local Services Ads?

Google ranks you on your bid and on how likely you are to produce a lead: how quickly you answer, how relevant you are to the search, your rating, your review count, your response time, your photos and completed verification. Answer every call, ask every customer for a review, and add real photos of your work.

Why am I not in the top three Local Services Ads?

Usually reviews, rating or responsiveness. Google's specialists describe up to 20 eligible slots, but if the businesses above you have far more reviews or answer faster, they win the top spots that take the calls. The system is heavily weighted toward review count and how steadily new reviews arrive.

Does answering my phone affect my Local Services Ads ranking?

Yes. Google says missed calls can hurt your responsiveness, which is part of how it ranks you. Since October 2026 a missed call during business hours can also be charged as a lead.

Should I turn on message leads?

If someone will reply quickly, yes. Google says more ways to reach you make a lead more likely, especially at night and on weekends. Unanswered messages hurt your responsiveness, and we have seen a rise in message leads that look like budget-burning attempts, so some clients keep them off for expensive job types.

Should I turn on booking leads?

Only if someone checks them every day. A booking request nobody opens is a lead you paid for and lost. If your business runs on phone calls, keep calls as the main way in.

Customers say they contacted me but I never saw the lead. Why?

The lead landed somewhere nobody looks, often as a booking request or message instead of a call. Decide how each lead type should reach you and turn on notifications for all of them.

Is the right phone number on my ad?

Call it and find out. We have found accounts where the number on the ad did not match the Business Profile. Make sure every call rings somewhere someone will pick up.

Do photos and my business bio matter on Local Services Ads?

Yes. Google lists high-quality images as part of profile quality and says higher-quality profiles may rank higher and pay less per lead. Use real photos of your work and a bio that says what you do and where.

Could my drop in leads just be the season?

It could. Most trades have slow months. But seasonality rarely takes leads to zero, so if yours have, look for something else that changed.

Should I use Maximize Leads or set my own bid?

Google recommends Maximize Leads and says businesses using it typically get more leads than similar businesses that do not. If your account has moved into Google Ads, manual bidding has been removed anyway.

Should I increase my Local Services Ads budget?

Only if you are spending the full budget every period and the leads are good. If you are underspending, more money will not buy more leads. Fix ranking first.

Can an agency fix Local Services Ads that show but don't get leads?

Yes. 5for5 reviews the account, the profile and the lead history, fixes the catching problems first and then works on ranking. Our founder Ken Waks was the first Operations Analyst on Google's Local Services Ads team. Book a call.
