Why your Local Services Ads are not showing
Something is keeping your ad out of the auction, and it is almost never the budget. Here are the five causes in the order we check them, what to look at when ads that were running suddenly stop, and the two fixes that will not help.
When Local Services Ads are not showing, something is keeping the ad out of the auction. It is almost never the budget being too low, and raising it almost never fixes it. Below is the order we check an account in, because the order matters: the first three causes explain most of the accounts we are asked to look at.
First, check how you are checking
Searching for yourself proves nothing. Whether your ad appears depends on who is searching, where they are, the job they typed, the time of day, and how much of the budget is left, and Google rotates which businesses appear. Owners search their own trade from their own phone at their own desk, see a competitor, and conclude the ads are broken. Open the account instead and look at three numbers: impressions, spend against budget, and status.
| What you see in the account | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Almost no impressions, budget unspent | You are not entering the auction. Start at cause 1. |
| Impressions were fine, then stopped | Something changed: a document, billing, budget, a setting. See "Suddenly stopped". |
| Impressions only when people search your name | Eligible, but losing the big searches on ranking. See "Only for my name". |
| Impressions but no calls | A different problem. Read why your ads are not getting leads. |
The causes, in the order we check them
- Budget spent, or the ads paused. The simplest cause and the first to rule out. A budget that runs out on Tuesday means no ad until the next period. A pause someone set in the spring is still a pause. Check status and spend before anything else.
- Verification pending or expired. Ads do not run until Google's checks for your category are complete, and they stop when an insurance certificate or licence expires. The notice in the account names the document. How to unstick verification.
- The ad schedule is narrower than your hours. Business hours and the ad schedule are separate settings. Business hours tell customers when you answer. The ad schedule tells Google when the ad may run. We audited a roofer with a large budget getting 28 impressions a month. The schedule was set to custom hours, in the wrong time zone. Set it to every hour someone can pick up the phone, and check the time zone.
- Job types or the service area too narrow. You only show for the job types you have switched on and the areas you have drawn. Turn on everything you do and want to book. Draw the area around where customers really come from. Leave off work you cannot take, because Google no longer credits those leads.
- Your profile cannot compete. Eligible, but outranked. Rating, review count, responsiveness and profile quality decide who fills the carousel. If the businesses showing have hundreds of reviews and you have forty, this is the cause, and it is the slowest to fix.
Suddenly stopped
When ads that were running stop, look for what changed, in this order.
- An insurance certificate or licence expired. The account will have asked for a new one.
- Billing failed in your Google Ads account. Local Services Ads bill through Google Ads, so a declined card there stops the ads here.
- A policy notice. The account names the issue. Fix that and nothing else first.
- The weekly budget ran out. Once an account moves into Google Ads the budget becomes a daily average, which changes the pacing, but as of late October 2026 none of our clients' accounts has moved yet.
- Someone edited the schedule or job types. Agencies, staff and past agencies all have logins.
- Your account just moved into Google Ads. Google says to allow up to two weeks for performance to settle after migration. What the move changes.
Only for my name
If your ad appears when someone searches your business name and not for "plumber near me", you are eligible and losing. Google ranks on your bid and on how likely your ad is to produce a lead, which comes down to responsiveness, relevance, rating, review count, response time, photos and completed verification. Look at your lead history. If almost every lead is someone who already knew your name, this is your problem, and the fix is on the next page.
Only one of my locations shows
When several of your locations serve the same area, Google shows only your highest-ranking one for each search. Give each location its own service area so they stop competing. Then check for a duplicate Business Profile, or an old Local Services Ads account a past agency set up, which can compete with the one you are managing.
Distance, budget and the two things that will not help
Distance is not on Google's published list of ranking factors. Your service area decides where you can show at all, and the searcher's location is part of the context Google weighs, but reviews, responsiveness and profile quality do the work. A shop ten miles away with two hundred reviews beats you next door with twenty.
Budget only helps if you are already spending all of it. An unspent budget means you are losing auctions, not that you have too little money. More budget cannot buy eligibility, a working schedule or reviews.
A new account will not help either. A second Local Services Ads account for the same business can break Google's policies and starts with no history and no reviews. Fix the one you have.

Common questions about Local Services Ads not showing
Why aren't my Local Services Ads showing?
Something is keeping the ad out of the auction. In the order we check: the budget ran out or the ads are paused, verification is pending or expired, the ad schedule is narrower than your hours, job types or the service area are too narrow, or your profile cannot compete with the businesses already showing. Raising the budget almost never fixes it.
Why are my Local Services Ads getting no impressions?
A handful of impressions on a healthy budget means you are barely entering the auction. Check verification first, then the ad schedule and its time zone, your enabled job types, your service area, and your reviews against the businesses in the carousel.
Why isn't my Local Services Ads budget being spent?
An unspent budget means you are losing auctions, not that you have too much money. More budget will not help until you fix what is keeping you out: eligibility, schedule, job types, service area or a weak profile.
Why did my Local Services Ads suddenly stop showing?
Look for what changed: an expired insurance certificate or licence, a billing failure in your Google Ads account, a policy notice, a budget that ran out, or someone editing the schedule or job types. If your account just moved into Google Ads, Google says to allow up to two weeks for performance to settle.
Why do my ads only show when people search my business name?
You are eligible but losing searches like "plumber near me" to competitors on ranking. That is usually reviews, rating, responsiveness and profile quality. Check your lead history: if nearly every lead already knew your name, this is the problem.
Why are my ads off when my business is open?
Business hours and the ad schedule are separate settings. If the schedule says custom hours, check it, and check the time zone. Set it to every hour someone can actually answer the phone.
Are my job types or service area stopping my ads from showing?
They can. You only show for the job types you have switched on and the areas you have drawn. Turn on everything you do and want to book, and draw the area around where your customers really come from.
Do I need reviews to show on Local Services Ads?
Reviews are required before pre-badge ads can run in many categories, and in every category your rating and review count affect where you rank. If competitors have hundreds and you have forty, start asking every customer.
Will raising my budget make my Local Services Ads show more?
Only if you are already spending the whole budget. If spend is low, the problem is eligibility or ranking, and more budget will not change it.
Why is only one of my locations showing?
When several of your locations serve the same area, Google shows only the highest-ranking one for each search. Give each location its own area, and check for duplicate Business Profiles or an old account a past agency set up.
Does distance from the customer affect my ranking?
Distance is not on Google's published list of ranking factors. Your service area decides where you can show, and the searcher's location is part of the context, but reviews, responsiveness and profile quality do more of the work.
