Why is my Local Services Ads verification stuck?
Almost every stalled account comes down to the same five causes: names that do not match, a missing or expired document, an unfinished background check, a billing failure in Google Ads, or a policy notice. Here is how to find yours, fix it, and get verified the first time.
Verification is where most Local Services Ads accounts die. Not rejected, just stuck: a document requested, a name that does not match, a background check nobody finished. The account sits at pending for weeks while the business pays an agency, or pays nobody and assumes the ads do not work. Almost every stall comes down to the same handful of causes.
What Google checks, and why it takes as long as it does
Depending on your trade and state, Google checks the business, its licence, its insurance and the owner before an ad runs. The exact list is on Google's screening and verification requirements page and changes by category. For a funeral home it is business documents and licensing. For an auto repair shop it is a certificate of insurance, the business licence and a background check on the business and its owner. For a real estate brokerage it is the brokerage licence and the entity behind it.
Verification stalls when documents arrive one at a time. Each one is reviewed, something is missing, Google asks, days pass, the next one arrives. We gather everything before we submit anything. For Justen Funeral Homes it took three days from receiving the business documents to the first charged lead. A landscaping client was verified in under a week the same way.
Why it is stuck: the five usual causes
- The names do not match. Google compares the business name across everything you submit. If you trade under a different name from your legal entity, the licence says one thing and the insurance says another, and the account sits. Fix: use the legal name exactly as it appears on your documents, and explain the trade name plainly in the business details Google asks for. That one mismatch kept 10:10 Real Estate Group stuck until we spelled out the connection. Once we did, approval took less than a week.
- A document is missing or expired. An insurance certificate past its date, a licence that lapsed, a registration document that shows the wrong entity. The notice in your account names the document. Send exactly that, current, and nothing else.
- The background check was never finished. It is a separate step with a separate email, and it is the one owners most often leave in the inbox. Complete it the day it arrives.
- Billing failed. Local Services Ads billing runs through your Google Ads account, and a payment problem there stops the ads. Check Google Ads billing, not only the Local Services dashboard.
- A policy notice. Less common, and the account tells you. Fix the exact thing it names before touching anything else.
Verified, but no badge
Since 20 October 2025 there is one badge, Google Verified. It replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified, and the consumer money-back guarantee ended with them. If you were verified before that date, your badge switched over on its own.
Two things surprise owners. First, Google says the badge is not currently available for dining verticals, which its screening page lists as Food and Beverage, Restaurants, and Dessert and Coffee. A restaurant can run Local Services Ads, pass every check and still show without a badge. Auto repair shops do get it, whatever you may have read. Second, in many categories Google now runs pre-badge ads: once you pass the preliminary checks you can start taking leads while the remaining checks finish, but Google places the listing below businesses that have completed everything. Pre-badge ads are not available for garage door services, health care verticals or locksmiths, and reviews are required before they go live, subject to the category. Details are on Google's getting started page. The badge change has its own guide, Google Guaranteed vs Google Verified.
My badge disappeared, or the account was suspended
Usually one of the five causes above, arriving later. An insurance certificate expired. Google asked for documents to be checked again. A payment failed in Google Ads. The notice in the account names the reason, and the fix is that reason and nothing else. Resist the urge to change job types, budgets and the service area at the same time, because then you will not know what worked.
Do not open a second account. A second Local Services Ads account for the same business can break Google's policies, and it starts from zero: no history, no reviews carried over, no responsiveness record. Whatever is wrong, fix it in the account you have.
How to get verified the first time
- RequiredEvery document before you start. Registration or incorporation document, licence number and a copy, a link where the licence can be checked, current insurance certificate. Whatever your category's list says.
- RequiredOne business name. The legal name on the documents, spelled the same everywhere, with the trade name explained in the business details.
- RequiredThe background check, done the day it arrives.
- RequiredGoogle Ads billing set up and working before the first ad is due to run.
- HelpsA Google Business Profile with reviews. Pre-badge ads need them in many categories, and reviews decide where you rank once you are live.

Common questions about Local Services Ads verification
Why is my Local Services Ads verification taking so long?
Usually because documents arrived one at a time, or the background check was never finished. Google checks your business, licence, insurance and owner depending on your trade. Have everything ready on day one and complete the background check straight away. Done that way, one of our clients went from documents to first lead in three days.
Why was my verification rejected?
Most often a document is missing or expired, or the business name does not match across your documents. If you trade under a different name from your legal entity, say so plainly in the business details and use the legal name exactly as the documents show it.
What documents does Google need for Local Services Ads?
It depends on your category and state. Expect a business registration or incorporation document, your licence number and a copy of the licence, proof of insurance, and a background check on the owner. Google's screening requirements page lists what applies to you.
Can I run ads before verification is finished?
In many categories, yes. Google's pre-badge ads let you take leads after the preliminary checks while the rest finish, but your listing is placed below fully verified businesses. Pre-badge ads are not offered for garage door services, health care or locksmiths.
Why don't I have a Google Verified badge even though I passed?
Google says the badge is not currently available for dining businesses, such as restaurants and coffee shops. You can be fully verified and run ads in those categories without a badge showing. Auto repair shops do get the badge.
What happened to Google Guaranteed and Google Screened?
Google replaced them, along with License Verified, with the single Google Verified badge on 20 October 2025. The consumer money-back guarantee ended on the same date, and claims closed on 7 December 2025.
Why did my badge disappear?
Usually an insurance certificate or licence expired, Google asked for documents to be checked again, there is a policy issue, or a payment failed. Billing runs through Google Ads, so a problem there stops your Local Services Ads too. The notice in your account names the reason.
Why did Google ask me to resubmit documents I already sent?
Google re-checks businesses when documents expire, details change, or something does not match. Read the request, send exactly what it asks for, current and under the same business name.
Should I open a new Local Services Ads account if mine is stuck?
No. A second account for the same business can break Google's policies, and it loses your history and reviews. Fix the account you have.
Can an agency get my Local Services Ads account verified?
Yes. 5for5 gathers the documents, submits them together, finishes the checks and fixes name mismatches. Our founder Ken Waks was the first Operations Analyst on Google's Local Services Ads team. Book a call and we will start with an audit.
