What has changed recently
A lot of advice about Local Services Ads is out of date, including old answers from ChatGPT and other AI tools. Before you trust anything you read, know these four changes.
- 20 October 2025: Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified were replaced by one badge, Google Verified. The money-back guarantee for consumers ended that day. Full guide.
- Since July 2024: you cannot manually dispute leads. Google credits invalid leads automatically, and no longer credits leads for job types or areas you do not serve. You can rate leads, and rating still carries weight. Full guide.
- August 2026: Local Services Ads started moving into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. Manual bidding is going away and weekly budgets become daily. Full guide.
- 1 October 2026: missed calls during business hours can be charged as leads if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Full guide.
Quick diagnosis
| What you are seeing | Most likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Almost no impressions, budget not spent | You are not getting into the auction | Not showing |
| Ads stopped suddenly | Expired document, billing problem or budget | Not showing |
| Only showing for your business name | Losing the bigger searches to competitors | Not getting leads |
| Impressions but nobody calls | Ranking, missed calls, or a profile that does not convince | Not getting leads |
| Paying for calls you could not take | Settings too wide, or missed-call charges | Missed-call charges |
| Cannot find the dispute button | Disputes were replaced by automatic credits | Lead credits |
| Verification stuck or badge missing | Documents, names or expiry dates | Verification |
| Dashboard is gone | Your account moved into Google Ads | Dashboard moved |
One thing before you start: do not judge your ads by searching for yourself. Whether you show depends on who is searching, where they are, the job they searched for, the time, and how much of the budget is left, and Google rotates who appears. Check impressions, spend and status in your account instead.
Ads not showing
1. Why aren't my Local Services Ads showing?
Something is keeping your ad out of the auction. In the order we check: budget spent or ads paused, verification pending or expired, an ad schedule narrower than your hours, job types or service area too narrow, or a profile that cannot compete. Raising the budget almost never fixes it. Full answer.
2. Why are my Local Services Ads getting no impressions?
You are barely entering the auction. Check verification, then the ad schedule and its time zone, job types, service area, and your reviews against the carousel. We audited a roofer with a large budget getting 28 impressions a month: custom hours, wrong time zone. Full answer.
3. Why isn't my Local Services Ads budget being spent?
An unspent budget means you are losing auctions, not that you have too much money. More budget will not help until eligibility, schedule, job types, service area or the profile is fixed. Full answer.
4. Why did my Local Services Ads suddenly stop showing?
Look for what changed: an expired insurance certificate or licence, a billing failure in Google Ads, a policy notice, a budget that ran out, or someone editing the schedule or job types. After a migration, Google says to allow up to two weeks to settle. Full answer.
5. Why do my ads only show when people search my business name?
You are eligible but losing "plumber near me" to competitors on reviews, rating, responsiveness and profile quality. Full answer.
6. Why are my ads off when my business is open?
Business hours and the ad schedule are separate settings. If the schedule says custom hours, check it and its time zone. Full answer.
7. Are my job types or service area stopping my ads from showing?
They can. You only show for the job types you have switched on and the areas you have drawn. Full answer.
8. Do I need reviews to show on Local Services Ads?
Pre-badge ads need them in many categories, and in every category your rating and review count decide where you rank. Full answer.
9. Will raising my budget make my Local Services Ads show more?
Only if you are already spending all of it. Full answer.
10. Why is only one of my locations showing?
Google shows only your highest-ranking location for each search. Give each its own area, and check for duplicate profiles or an old agency account. Full answer.
11. Does distance from the customer affect my ranking?
Distance is not on Google's published list. Your service area decides where you can show; reviews, responsiveness and profile quality do the work. Full answer.
Showing but not getting leads
12. Why am I getting impressions but no leads?
People are choosing someone else, or reaching out and nobody is catching it. Check missed calls, unread messages, the phone number on the ad, and your reviews and photos against the businesses above you. Full answer.
13. Why did my leads suddenly drop?
Missed calls hurting responsiveness, a lapsed document, a budget running out early, job types switched off, or a new competitor with more reviews. If nothing changed, check the season. Full answer.
14. How do I rank higher on Local Services Ads?
Google ranks on your bid and how likely you are to produce a lead: responsiveness, relevance, rating, review count, response time, photos and verification. Answer every call, ask every customer for a review, add real photos. Full answer.
15. Why am I not in the top three?
Usually reviews, rating or responsiveness. A roofer we audited had 45 reviews against competitors with 107 to 679. Google's own specialists describe up to 20 eligible slots, but the first three take the calls, and the system is heavily weighted toward review count and velocity. Full answer.
16. Does answering my phone affect my ranking?
Yes. Missed calls lower your responsiveness, and since October 2026 can also appear on your bill. Full answer.
17. Should I turn on message leads?
If someone will reply quickly, yes. Unanswered messages hurt responsiveness, and some clients turn them off for expensive job types because of budget-burning fakes. Full answer.
18. Should I turn on booking leads?
Only if someone checks them every day. Full answer.
19. Customers say they contacted me but I never saw the lead. Why?
The lead landed where nobody looks, often as a booking request instead of a call. Decide how each lead type reaches you and turn on every notification. Full answer.
20. Is the right phone number on my ad?
Call it and find out. Full answer.
21. Do photos and my business bio matter?
Yes. Google says higher-quality profiles may rank higher and pay less per lead. Full answer.
22. Could my drop in leads just be the season?
It could, but seasonality rarely takes leads to zero. Full answer.
Costs, charges and bad leads
23. Does Google charge for missed calls?
Yes, since 1 October 2026, when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds during business hours. Follow-up calls can be charged too. Full answer.
24. How do I avoid being charged for missed calls?
Answer during scheduled hours, forward calls to someone who will, or take uncovered hours off the ad schedule. Full answer.
25. Why are my Local Services Ads leads so expensive?
Lead cost depends on trade and market, and climbs when you pay for leads you cannot use: wrong job types, wrong areas, and now missed calls. Full answer.
26. What is a good cost per lead?
There is no benchmark. Accounts we manage range from under $20 a lead for auto repair to about $54 for painting. A good cost per lead is small next to the job it turns into. Full answer.
27. Can I still dispute a Local Services Ads lead?
Not manually. Google removed the dispute button in July 2024 and reviews every lead automatically. Full answer.
28. How do I get credited for a bad lead?
Rate the lead and say exactly what was wrong. Google credits spam, robocalls, wrong numbers, sales calls, duplicates and calls for another business, and says feedback can earn a bonus credit. Full answer.
29. Will Google credit a lead for a service I don't offer or an area I don't serve?
No, not any more. The fix is in your settings. Full answer.
30. How long do credits take, and what does "In review" mean?
Usually within 30 days. "In review" means Google is still deciding. Full answer.
31. Why am I getting so many spam calls?
Rate every one so the system learns. If they are wrong-fit calls rather than spam, tighten job types and service area. Full answer.
32. Should I use Maximize Leads or set my own bid?
Google recommends Maximize Leads, and manual bidding is gone once your account moves into Google Ads. Full answer.
33. Should I increase my budget?
Only if you are spending all of it and the leads are good. Full answer.
Verification, badges and account changes
34. Why is my verification taking so long?
Documents arriving one at a time, or an unfinished background check. Have everything ready on day one. Full answer.
35. Why is my verification stuck or rejected?
Usually a missing or expired document, or names that do not match across your paperwork. Full answer.
36. Does Google Guaranteed still exist?
No. It became Google Verified on 20 October 2025 and the guarantee ended. Update your truck. Full answer.
37. What does the Google Verified badge mean, and how do I get it?
You passed Google's checks for your category. Complete every verification step. Not currently offered for dining businesses. Full answer.
38. Why did my badge disappear, or my account get suspended?
An expired document, a re-check, a policy issue or a failed payment in Google Ads. The notice names the reason. Full answer.
39. Where did my Local Services Ads dashboard go?
Your account moved into Google Ads. Same placement and billing; new screens, daily budgets, no manual bidding, and old reports do not transfer. Full answer.
40. Should I create a new account if mine isn't working?
No. A second account can break Google's policies and wipes out your history and reviews. Full answer.
